The white dunes with the coastal junipers
Kedrodasos lies at the southwestern tip of the Chania prefecture, about one kilometre east of Elafonisi, facing the Libyan Sea. It owes its name to the age-old 'cedars' growing on its white sand dunes, a landscape often described as one of the most distinctive in Crete.
The trees are in fact not true cedars but coastal junipers (Juniperus macrocarpa and Juniperus phoenicea), which form a priority habitat on the coastal dunes. The zone from Chrysoskalitissa to Cape Krios, to which Kedrodasos belongs, is part of the Natura 2000 network, and visitors are asked not to step on the roots or camp beneath the fragile trees.
The beach remains completely unorganized, with no facilities at all, and the only shade is cast by the junipers themselves. Access is via a dirt road near Elafonisi followed by a short walk on a path among the trees, so it is wise to carry water and supplies.
