The ancient seaport at the mouth of the gorge

Sougia lies on the south coast of Chania, at the mouth of the Agia Irini gorge, about 70 kilometres from the city. Its long beach, roughly 1.5 kilometres of fine pebble, unfolds in front of the small seaside village of Sougia, in the Selino district, and counts among the most distinctive shores of southwestern Crete.

In antiquity this was Syia, the seaport of Doric Elyros. The name is said to derive from the Greek word "sys" (hog), as the area was famed for pig rearing in its oak forests. The town flourished in Roman times, and beneath the chapel of Agios Panteleimon survive mosaics of a 6th-century early Christian basilica. From Sougia also begins the trail to ancient Lissos, through the gorge of the same name.

The beach is organized, with sunbeds and umbrellas in season, a lifeguard in the summer months, showers, and tavernas and accommodation in the village. Rocks and trees give natural shade in places, the water deepens fairly quickly, and the road is paved almost to the shore. It has been awarded a Blue Flag.
