The fishing harbor with traces of ancient Minoa
Marathi lies on the southeastern shore of the Akrotiri peninsula of Chania, about 17 kilometres east of town, looking across the bay of Souda towards Cape Drapano. Two sandy beaches are separated by a small pier that still serves as a mooring for fishing boats, giving the settlement the feel of a small fishing village.
The site's history runs deep: Marathi is identified with ancient Minoa, believed to have been the seaport of ancient Aptera, with traces of habitation reaching into Roman times. A semicircular section of ancient wall is said to be still visible on the beach, while the islet of Palaiosouda, also known as Marathi islet, with its small pine wood, lies across the mouth of the cove.
The beach is organized in the summer season, with sunbeds, umbrellas, a lifeguard and showers, and tavernas and accommodation close by. The road is paved almost to the sand, and the beach is among those awarded the Blue Flag for 2026.
