The enclosed cove of Akrotiri
Loutraki lies on the southeastern side of the Akrotiri peninsula of Chania, next to Marathi, about 16 kilometres from town. It is an enclosed cove set between hills, rimmed by rocky shores on almost every side except the west, where a beach of fine sand opens up.
The name is a diminutive of the Greek word 'loutro', meaning bath, a place name found often along Greek coasts. The cove faces south towards the bay of Souda and Cape Drapano, and the surrounding landscape remains low and hilly, with sparse vegetation and a few buildings on the rises.
The beach is organized in the summer season, with sunbeds, umbrellas and showers, while food, water and accommodation are close at hand. The road is paved almost to the beach.
