The Akrotiri bay with the little islet
Kalathas sits on the west side of the Akrotiri peninsula, about 12 kilometres northeast of Chania town, at the heart of an open natural bay. The beach's trademark is the small islet rising some hundred and twenty metres offshore.
The shore forms three small stretches of fine golden sand separated by low rocks. Kalathas itself is a relatively recent settlement, grown mostly by Chania residents who sought a home outside the city, while within a few kilometres lie the monasteries of Akrotiri and the Venizelos Graves.
The beach is organized in the summer season, with sunbeds, umbrellas, a lifeguard and showers, and tavernas and accommodation close by. The road is paved almost to the sand, and the beach is among those awarded the Blue Flag.
