The city beach with the fishing harbor

Nea Chora is the town beach of Chania, a few minutes' walk west of the Venetian harbour. It takes its name from the namesake quarter, the 'new town' built outside the Venetian walls, and pairs a small fishing harbour with a long stretch of sand reaching the mouth of the Kladisos river.

The neighbourhood took shape in the last quarter of the 19th century, as people from the Chania countryside settled around the walls; after the catastrophe of 1922 it also took in refugees from Asia Minor. The fishing harbour and the small tavernas along its seafront give it a neighbourhood feel to this day, even though it sits right beside the city centre.

The beach is organized, with sunbeds and umbrellas in the summer season, a lifeguard, showers and natural shade in places, and the terrain is sandy with rocks in spots. It is reached by a paved road along the city seafront, and the beach is among those awarded the Blue Flag.

About this beach

Nea Chora is exposed in the meltemi — often choppy on summer N/NE days. That comes from the measured shape of the coastline around it and our curated wind records — a seasonal picture, not a live forecast, so check live wind and waves before you go.

Nea Chora is oriented towards the north-west, so it usually has natural cover from southerly, south-easterly and south-westerly winds.

Nea Chora has sand and pebbles underfoot with shallow, gently shelving water — handy for families with young children.

For amenities, Nea Chora has an organised beach, sunbeds and natural shade. It has a Seatrac assisted-access unit for accessibility — confirm it is in service before travelling. There is a campsite nearby (Camping Hania, ~1914 m).
