The turquoise lagoon of Gramvousa

A shallow, turquoise lagoon forms between the Gramvousa peninsula and the islet of Tigani, at the northwest tip of Crete. The sandbar shifts shape with the seasons.

The area has a heavy pirate history: the islet of Imeri Gramvousa, with its Venetian castle, was a 16th-century pirate base. It is wild and undeveloped; reach it by boat from Kissamos or a rough dirt road and a downhill walk.
