A shore below ancient Aptera
Kalami sits on the southern shore of Souda Bay in Apokoronas, Crete, about fifteen kilometres east of the city of Chania. The beach spreads below the village of the same name, with sand and fine pebbles and a small harbour at its eastern end.
Just above rises the Itzedin fortress, built in 1872 during Ottoman rule and used for decades as a prison. On the plateau overhead lie the ruins of ancient Aptera, one of the most powerful cities of western Crete, and the spot offers views across the whole of Souda Bay and the islet with its Venetian fort.
The beach is organized, with seasonal sunbeds and umbrellas, and food, water and accommodation close by. A paved road reaches almost to the shore, and the seabed deepens at a moderate pace.
