Pebbles and sea caves at the gorge mouth
Ilingas lies about two kilometres west of Chora Sfakion, on the road to Anopoli, at the mouth of the gorge of the same name, also known as the Kavi gorge. The gorge begins high up in the Lefka Ori, cuts through their steep slopes and ends at this pebble shore, enclosed between tall limestone walls.
The most distinctive feature of the landscape is the sea caves the waves have carved at the base of the cliffs: they divide the shore into three successive coves, of which the western one is the main beach, while the more easterly ones can only be reached from the sea. The rock hollows offer natural shade in places within the austere Sfakian scenery.
The beach is unorganized, with pebbles and deep water, while food, water and accommodation are available nearby. A paved road reaches close to the shore and the descent finishes along a short footpath.
