The peninsula of the seaside junipers
Grammeno stretches along a low peninsula a few kilometres west of Paleochora, on the southern coast of Chania, Crete. The headland forms shores facing different directions around it, with small coves of fine sand and stretches of pebbles, near the mouth of the Pelekaniotis river.
The character of the place is set by a rare stand of seaside junipers rooted in the sand. These trees grow extremely slowly, roughly a centimetre a year, which is why visitors are asked not to disturb them. Together with the tamarisks they cast natural shade, something uncommon on Crete's southern shores, and sections of the coast have been awarded a Blue Flag.
The beach is not organized, but there is parking and tavernas nearby, and a paved road leads out to the peninsula. The seabed starts out shallow, with fine sand alternating with pebbles along the shore.
