The white sands of the ancient harbour
Falasarna sits on the west coast of Crete, at the base of the Gramvousa peninsula, about 59 kilometres from Chania. The great shore is in fact a chain of consecutive beaches, its central stretch being "Pachia Ammos", where the whitish sand lends the water pale, almost tropical tones.
The name is said to come from the nymph Falasarni. Ancient Falasarna was among the most powerful cities of western Crete in the Hellenistic era, with an enclosed harbour built in a lagoon that communicated with the sea through a narrow channel. The great earthquake of 365 AD uplifted western Crete, so the ancient harbour now stands several metres above sea level. In the archaeological site stands a stone "throne", by one account linked to Poseidon.
The beach is organized, with sunbeds and umbrellas in season, a lifeguard in the summer months, showers, and food and lodging options nearby. The landscape alternates white sand with rocks in places, and the road is paved almost to the shore.
