The white lake beside Chrysoskalitissa
Aspri Limni lies at the southwestern tip of Crete, in Chania, a few hundred metres from Chrysoskalitissa monastery and close to Elafonisi. It owes its name, 'white lake', to its appearance: a small pocket of white sand enclosed by rocks, resembling a little lake within the sea.
The area belongs to the Natura 2000 network and hosts the westernmost population of Theophrastus's palm on Crete, the same rare species that forms the palm grove of Vai. On the rock next door, tradition holds that one of the ninety steps of Chrysoskalitissa monastery is made of gold, visible only to those free of sin.
The beach remains entirely unorganized, with no facilities and no shade, and is reached by a passable dirt track near Chrysoskalitissa. The water in front of the sand starts out shallow.
