The pebble cove of Rodopos
Afrata beach opens onto a small pebble cove on the Rodopos peninsula of Chania, about one kilometre east of the village of the same name and 3.5 kilometres north of Kolymbari. The road from the village winds down through a small gorge full of aromatic plants and ends at the shore.
This corner of Rodopos keeps a wild, unadorned beauty. On the way from Kolymbari stands the historic monastery of Panagia Odigitria (Gonia), while a little north of the beach begins the path to Ellinospilios, a cave with important prehistoric finds, though entering it requires experience and proper equipment. The beach is noted as a favourite stop for people of the area.
It has sunbeds and umbrellas in season, and a small canteen is reported to cover the basics of food and water. Trees give natural shade in places, the shore is made of pebbles and fine gravel, and access is by a narrow but paved road.
