The naturists' cove among the rocks
At the eastern end of Sougia's long beach, on the south coast of Chania, the shore ends in a small cove hidden among the rocks. This stretch, of fine pebble and coarse sand, is noted as the corner favoured almost exclusively by naturists.
The wider shore corresponds to ancient Syia, the seaport of Doric Elyros, which flourished in Roman times. The name is said to derive from the Greek word "sys" (hog), after the pig rearing in the area's oak forests. Unlike the central section in front of the village, the eastern end keeps a more secluded, natural character, with the rocks screening it from view of the road.
This section is unorganized, with natural rocky shade in places and water that deepens quickly. It is reached on foot from the village and Sougia's seafront, where food and water are close at hand.
