The sands beneath the Venetian castle
Fragkokastello beach stretches out in front of the Venetian fortress of the same name, on the south coast of Sfakia, about twelve kilometres east of Chora Sfakion. The castle was built by the Venetians in 1371-1374 to control the area, and the locals dubbed it 'Fragkokastello', the castle of the Franks, a name it has kept to our times.
Here, on 17 May 1828, the Epirote chieftain Hatzimichalis Dalianis and a few hundred men stood against far larger Ottoman forces and fell together with many of his companions. Tradition holds that in certain years around late May, in the morning dew, the Drosoulites appear on the plain, shadows of armed warriors marching towards the castle, one of Crete's best-known legends.
The beach is sandy with shallow water and organized, with sunbeds and umbrellas in season and showers, while food, water and accommodation are close by. A paved road reaches close to the shore.
