The rocky cove with the sea cave
Koutalas lies at the tip of Cape Drepano, just north of Kokkino Chorio in Apokoronas, about 25 kilometres east of Chania. The small cove forms at the mouth of a rocky gorge and is enclosed by high cliffs, with large rounded pebbles and stones along the shore.
The place has a strongly cave-marked character: right beside the beach opens the imposing sea cave of Koutalas, which some also call Nerospilia, while the wider Drepano area holds the underwater Elephants' Cave and Petsis Cave, which is why the coast is familiar to divers. Neighbouring Kokkino Chorio became famous as a filming location for the 1964 movie Zorba the Greek, and on Drapanokefala hill stand German fortifications from World War II that once overlooked Souda Bay.
The beach remains unorganized and without facilities, so supplies are best brought along. Access is by a passable dirt road, the terrain is rocky, and there is natural shade in places.
