The shore of the freshwater springs
Glyka Nera hides between Chora Sfakion and Loutro, on the south coast of Chania, at the foot of steep slopes that drop from the Lefka Ori mountains to the sea. It owes its name to the freshwater springs that rise up through the pebbles and the seabed, water filtered through the Sfakian limestone that reaches the shore cold and clear.
The flow of the springs is reported to be strongest in spring and autumn, when the groundwater pressure is highest. The beach's fame has travelled well beyond Crete: in 2003 the British Times is reported to have ranked it among the twenty best beaches in Europe. Even so, no road ever reaches it, and the place keeps its remote character.
The beach has pebbles and deep water and is partly organized, with sunbeds and umbrellas in season, food and water available close by and natural shade in places. Access is by boat or on foot, along the coastal path that links Chora Sfakion with Loutro.
