The white cove by the knife-shaped cape
Macherida is a small cove of white sand on the Akrotiri peninsula of Chania, Crete, near Chorafakia and Tersanas. Its name is attributed to the sharp rocky cape at its northern edge, said to resemble a knife, though another account traces it to a wildflower the locals call 'macherida'.
The cove faces west, tucked between rocks that set the white sand off in sharp contrast. Close to the road lies the small Macherida pond, a wetland of brackish water where water snakes, turtles and seabirds are reported to live.
The beach remains unorganized, with no umbrellas and no shade. Food and water can be found in the wider area, where there is also accommodation, while a paved road reaches close to the shore and the water starts out shallow.
