The sandy strand at the mouth of the Almyros
Kalyvaki is the westernmost beach of Georgioupoli, in Apokoronas of Chania, beside the mouth of the Almyros river, which flows all year round. The sandy strand opens west of the little harbour, with the whitewashed chapel of Agios Nikolaos on its rocky jetty presiding over the scene.
Georgioupoli was born in the 19th century, when much of the area's marshland was drained. The settlement was first named Almyroupoli, after the river, and in 1899 was renamed in honour of Prince George. The site is identified with ancient Amphimalla, the port of ancient Lappa. The waters of the Almyros are said to keep the sea here noticeably cooler, and the shore is also recorded as a nesting spot for sea turtles.
The beach is organized, with sunbeds and umbrellas in season, a summer lifeguard, showers, and tavernas and accommodation close by. The sand meets shallow water, and the road is paved almost to the beach. It has been awarded a Blue Flag.
