The shore at the mouth of the Anydri gorge
Gialiskari lies about four kilometres east of Paleochora, on the south coast of Chania, where the Anydri gorge meets the sea. It is a small cluster of successive beaches at the eastern end of Paleochora's shoreline, and its name is linked to the Greek word 'gialos', meaning the shore or seaside.
The area has its own recent history: in the 1970s Gialiskari was a favourite haunt of Paleochora's hippies, who walked over from the town carrying water and supplies and stayed on the shore for days at a time. The place has remained largely undeveloped ever since, with a bare, dry Sfakian landscape and low rocks framing the coves.
The beach has coarse sand and pebbles and is partly organized, with a seasonal canteen, a few sunbeds in summer and a taverna close by. Access is via a dirt road (with parking nearby), on foot through the Anydri gorge, or by boat.
