The tongue of sand below the castle
Ammoglossa is the closest beach to Lefkada Town, at the entrance to the island, directly opposite the castle of Agia Mavra. Its name describes its very shape: from above it looks like a thin tongue of sand (ammos and glossa) reaching into the sea, with fine sand and white pebbles.
Above the beach looms the castle of Agia Mavra, a fortress at the northeastern tip of the island. Its first fortification was completed in 1302 by Ioannis Orsini, who received Lefkada as a dowry, and the castle was besieged twelve times over the seven centuries of its history. The Ottomans took it in 1479 and later enlarged it, giving it much of the form it keeps to the present day.
The beach lies beside the town's entrance and is reachable on foot or by bike, as well as by road with limited parking. There are no organised facilities or natural shade on the sand, while a canteen operates seasonally across from the entrance.
