The long shore with the windmills

Agios Ioannis, also called Ai Giannis, stretches just outside the town of Lefkada, a long shore of coarse sand and pebbles running some three kilometres to the north. It faces the open Ionian and carries a Blue Flag distinction.

The beach takes its character from the old windmills at the adjacent stretch known as Mili (Myloi). As many as twelve mills are said to have once worked in the area, with roots in the Venetian era, of which only a few survive. For decades the beach has been one of Greece's best-known destinations for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Being only a couple of kilometres from the town, it is easy to reach. In season it is organized, with beach bars, sunbeds, umbrellas and cafés, roadside parking along its length, and a seasonal lifeguard, and it remains a hub for windsurf and kitesurf schools.
