Whitish sand beside Minoan Roussolakkos

Chiona stretches two kilometres east of Palekastro, at the easternmost tip of Crete in the Lasithi prefecture, with pale sand that lives up to its name. It is reported, though, that in the Cretan dialect "chiona" meant a carob storehouse, after the buildings that stood near the shore for loading carobs onto boats before roads reached the area.

Right beside the beach lies Roussolakkos, one of the most important Minoan settlements of eastern Crete, with the remains of an ancient harbour. To the west rises the hill of Kastri, the islet of Grandes emerges offshore, and the wider area holds the Minoan peak sanctuary of Petsofas and Toplou Monastery.

The beach has fine and coarse sand and shallow water, with a seasonal setup. Tavernas operate right beside it, there is parking, and access is via a paved road from Palekastro.
