The cove with the basilica on the Spinalonga peninsula
Kolokytha lies on the eastern side of the Spinalonga peninsula, opposite the islet of the same name, near Elounda in Lasithi. The cove, also known as Agios Loukas after the nearby chapel, hides among old olive groves, with fine white sand and tamarisks giving natural shade.
Beside the beach survive the ruins of an early Christian basilica of the 5th to 6th century, uncovered in 1971, with scattered marble capitals and traces of mosaic floors: tradition holds it was dedicated to Saint Catherine or Saint Helen and was violently destroyed, perhaps by pirates. The peninsula also has the chapel of Agios Fokas, said to commemorate the liberation of Crete from the Arabs in 961 AD under Nikephoros Phokas, while the submerged ruins of ancient Olous lie by the isthmus of Elounda.
The beach is completely unorganized, with no facilities and shallow water. It is reached from Elounda along a passable dirt track across the peninsula, with a short walk at the end.
