Xerokampos's long sandy beach

Mazida Ammos is the longest beach of Xerokampos, at the southeastern tip of Crete, about five hundred metres from the small settlement in the municipality of Sitia. It spreads its fine white sand before the dry plain that gave the area its name, with bare mountains as a backdrop.

At its eastern end rises Cape Trachilos, at whose base a sea cave known as Fokiospilio is reported, a name that alludes to seals, while the Kavali islets can be seen offshore. The wider Xerokampos area has roots said to reach back to Minoan times and remains, to this day, only sparsely built, with a few houses and tavernas scattered across the plain.

The beach is natural and unorganized, with no sunbeds, fine sand and shallow water. Access is by a paved local road at Xerokampos, with parking close by, while the nearest tavernas are reported in the settlement.
