The town beach by the historic chapel
Ammoudi lies just one kilometre north of the centre of Agios Nikolaos, on Mirabello Bay in Lasithi. Its name, a diminutive of the Greek word for sand, suits its small scale: a narrow strip of fine sand set between rocks, with large tamarisk trees and picturesque buildings along the front.
A little further north, a seaside path leads to the chapel of Agios Nikolaos, said to date from around the 7th century and considered among the oldest in Crete: the whole city is said to have taken its name from it, the saint being, by tradition, the patron of sailors. From the rise by the chapel there are views over the town and Mirabello Bay.
The beach is organized, with sunbeds, umbrellas and water sports, and cafés and food options close by. Tamarisks and rocks give natural shade, access is easy from the town streets by paved road, and there is parking.
