The sandy beach by Elounda's harbour

Schisma is the main beach of Elounda, on Mirabello Bay in Lasithi, right beside the village harbour. It takes its name from the seaside settlement of the same name, which is said to have grown up around 1906 east of the harbour, its people living off fishing and whetstone quarrying.

Its setting is steeped in history: in the channel separating Elounda from the Kolokytha peninsula lie the submerged ruins of ancient Olous, one of the notable cities of ancient Crete, while the isthmus preserves the old salt pans, the windmills and the canal said to have been opened by the French in 1897. Around the beach spreads Elounda's most cosmopolitan face, with hotels and tavernas along the waterfront.

The beach is organized by the municipality, with fine sand and shallow water, sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, tavernas, cafés and water sports, and it holds a Blue Flag award. Access is by paved road within Elounda, with parking close by.
