The cove named after a cave's sound
Boufos is the best-known beach of Sisi, on the north coast of Lasithi in Crete, just a few metres east of the picturesque fishing village, in Charkoma cove. It forms at the mouth of the Agiasmenos stream, which carries water down from the Sellinari gorge, and it is said to owe its name to the distinctive "bouf" sound heard when the swell enters a cave on the nearby shore.
The place has deep roots: about a hundred metres away lies the Minoan settlement of Boufos, a complex that appears to be linked to the nearby palace of Malia. Between Boufos and the neighbouring Avlaki beach stands the small church of Agios Antonios, and the beach is among those awarded the Blue Flag.
The beach has coarse sand mixed with pebbles and shallow water, with a seasonal setup in summer. There are tavernas close by and parking, and access is via a paved road through Sisi.

The bay at Boufos opens to the north, so it usually has natural cover from southerly, south-easterly and south-westerly winds. Orientation only reflects which way the coast faces, not confirmed shelter, so check wind and waves in the app before you go.
Boufos has sand and pebbles underfoot with shallow, gently shelving water — handy for families with young children.
