The shore of the stone mortars
Chavania lies at the northern edge of Agios Nikolaos in Lasithi, Crete, on the road towards Elounda, facing east over the Mirabello gulf. The name is said to come from shoreline rocks that resembled "chavania", the mortars (from the Turkish word havan) in which people once ground salt and pepper.
Beside the beach rises Kefali tou Sarakinou, where excavations in recent years are reported to have uncovered a notable harbour settlement occupied from the Bronze Age to medieval times. According to the same reports, remains of a small Ottoman-era harbour can be made out in the sea, while tradition links the site to the Saracens. The beach is among those awarded the Blue Flag.
It is an organized beach with sunbeds and umbrellas, coarse sand mixed with pebbles and shallow water. Cafes and food are close by, parking is easy, and access is via a paved road.
