The Dioscuri shore on the Libyan Sea
Diaskari lies on the south coast of Lasithi in Crete, about four kilometres east of Makrigialos, open to the Libyan Sea. It is said to take its name from a sanctuary of the Dioscuri that stood on the hill separating it from the neighbouring Lagada beach.
The place has a Minoan past as well: a Late Minoan settlement with notable buildings is reported to have been located in 1972 on a hill above the shore. A short distance away are the Roman villa of Makrigialos and the Pefki gorge, and tamarisk trees are reported to shade the western part of the beach.
The sand is fine to coarse and the water shallow, with a light seasonal setup. A taverna operates here, there is parking, and access is via a paved, short local road from Makrigialos.
