The beach of natural clay
Argilos is one of the small sandy coves of Xerokambos, at the southeastern tip of Crete in the Lasithi prefecture. It owes its name to the clayey ground of the shore: bathers are said to gather pieces of clay from the beach for a natural "spa", a habit that has become its trademark.
Above Xerokambos rises the hill of Farmakokefalo, where the ruins of an ancient Hellenistic city, probably to be identified with ancient Ambelos, survive alongside the small church of Agios Nikolaos. The surrounding area remains one of the most remote corners of the island, with the Katsounaki gorge ending near the shore.
The beach has fine sand, shallow water and natural shade from the rocks. There are showers, while food, water and accommodation are close by. The road is paved to a point near the shore.
