A shore on the dry plain of ancient Ambelos

Ammos Xerokampou stretches along the southeastern tip of Crete, at the remote settlement of Xerokampos in the municipality of Sitia, about 44 kilometres south of Sitia town. Xerokampos takes its name from the dry plain that runs down to the sea and is reported to be one of the most arid corners of Greece.

The surrounding area carries deep history: on the Farmakokefalo hill above the settlement, excavations begun in 1984 revealed a Hellenistic city, likely identified with ancient Ambelos, while carved into the coastal rocks survive Hellenistic-era salt pans, with channels and basins, from which locals are said to have gathered salt until 1965. The landscape, bare rock and steep mountains behind the shore, keeps Xerokampos well away from mass tourism.

The shore is long and largely unorganized, with pebbles along the waterline and shallow water, facing southeast toward the Libyan Sea. Access is by paved local roads, with parking close by and tavernas a short distance away.
