The pebble cove below Kalamos

Chalkos sits at the southern tip of Kythira, near the village of Kalamos, a small cove of pebbles and rock facing straight south. Its unusual name has invited interpretations: one view holds that in antiquity the cove served as an unloading point for copper arriving from Cyprus, though this remains a hypothesis.

The scenery is among the most characteristic of the island's south: grey and reddish pebbles, rocks closing the cove on either side, and the open sea beyond. Along the road from Kalamos the cave of Agia Sofia, with its chapel built into the rock, is noted as one of the area's landmarks.

The beach is unorganized. It is reached by a passable dirt road near Kalamos, cars are left in a dirt parking area above the shore, and a snack bar operates in the summer season.
