The fishing hamlet with the colorful doors

Limnionas lies on the west coast of Kythira, about seven kilometres from Mylopotamos, and is one of the few corners of the island that preserves intact the look of an old fishing hamlet. Its name, a Greek word for a small natural anchorage, suits the little cove with its boats and fishermen's huts.

Around the shore stand traditional whitewashed cells with wide, colourfully painted doors, built to store the fishermen's boats. In the area of Aletarea behind the cove, salt is said to have once been gathered from the little pools that form at the base of the rocks, while north of Limnionas lies the sea cave of Fokospilia, said to be named after the seals. A short path from the beach leads to a natural pool carved into the rock.

The beach is unorganized, with pebbles and coarse sand, and is reached by a passable dirt road. A seasonal canteen is reported in the summer months, and a taverna, a cafe and parking are close by. Tamarisk trees reaching down to the shore offer natural shade.
