White krokales at the mouth of the gorge

Komponada stretches along the east coast of Kythira, near Travasarianika, at the point where the gorge that begins at Livadi meets the sea. It is one of the largest shores on this side of the island, set between Kaladi, Vlychada and Firi Ammos.

Its hallmark is the large white krokales, rounded stones which, it is reported, are carried down and polished by the winter waters of the gorge before being laid out along the shore. The beach faces east, with an open horizon out to sea and a view of the sunrise, while the surrounding landscape remains almost entirely unbuilt, as if the shore were a natural continuation of the ravine.

The beach is unorganized, with large stones and pebbles, and the seabed deepens fairly quickly. Access is by a passable dirt road; a seasonal canteen is reported in the summer months, and a taverna, a cafe and parking are close by.
