The southwest cove facing Chytra
Melidoni lies at the southwestern tip of Kythira, below the village of Drymonas, a small cove where fine sand mixes with coarser grains. Rising from the open sea opposite the beach is Chytra, the bare rock islet that serves as the landmark of the island's south and gives the shore its most recognisable backdrop.
Chytra, also known as Avgo, is said to hide a large sea cave in its interior where seals take refuge, and excursion boats from Kapsali approach it on their rounds. On the way down to the beach the old monastery of Agios Kosmas at Xeroulaki is noted, and Melidoni itself is regularly counted among the island's best-loved shores.
Access is by a passable dirt road starting from Drymonas, with parking close to the shore. In the summer months a seasonal canteen operates, and umbrellas and sunbeds are set out on part of the beach.
