The reddish shore of Kalamos

Fyri Ammos of Kalamos stretches along the southeastern coast of Kythira, one of the island's largest beaches, facing due east. There are two beaches by this name on Kythira, and this one, near the village of Kalamos, is the better known. The name is said to be linked to the distinctive reddish colour of its sand and pebbles.

The shore is laid with cobbles and reddish pebbles that give it its particular tone, set beneath rocky slopes on the island's eastern front. It is reported to have been honoured in the past with the Golden Starfish award for its natural beauty.

It is reached by a passable dirt road, with parking near the shore. In the summer season a canteen operates and umbrellas and sunbeds are set out on part of the beach. The ground is stony, with cobbles and rocks.
