Nagos: springs and plane trees in northern Chios

Nagos lies on the north-east coast of Chios, a few kilometres from Kardamyla, in a lush bay of plane trees and running water.

Its name is said to derive from the word 'naos' (temple), as excavations in 1921 uncovered the remains of an ancient temple near the springs. The abundant spring water feeds the rich vegetation, while a small church stands on the hill above the shore.

The beach is unorganised, with a seasonal canteen and some facilities at certain spots. The plane trees and tall trees offer natural shade, and there is parking nearby.
