Mavra Volia lies on the south coast of Chios, right beside the picturesque little port of Emporios, and stands out for its jet-black volcanic pebbles. The very name, meaning 'black pebbles', points to these dark, sea-polished stones that carpet the shore.

The pebbles are of volcanic origin and give the beach its distinctive colouring. The bay unfolds in successive coves below Emporios, while the wider area has yielded a prehistoric settlement and acropolis, with excavations that reveal very early habitation of the site.
