The cove that hid the Papanikolis

Elinta sits on the western coast of Chios, in a large enclosed bay below the mountain villages of Avgonyma and Anavatos, about 25 kilometres from Chios town. It is a shore of white pebbles and rock, where pine trees descend the slope almost to the water's edge.

The landscape around the cove is one of rare natural beauty, with high mountains closing off the bay. Tradition holds that during the Second World War the legendary Greek submarine Papanikolis hid in the waters of Elinta. By one account, the beach's name is linked to an ancient word for the sea.

Elinta is unorganized, with pebbles and rock, and the pines offer shade near the shore. There is parking nearby, though its road access has not yet been confirmed by a direct source.
