Glyfada's free stretch of sand

Glyfada Akti B stretches along the Glyfada waterfront in Athens' southern suburbs, one of the municipal sections of the long sandy shore near the marina. The area's name is said to come from the brackish, "glyfo" water of the wells first dug here in the early 20th century.

In antiquity the area is identified with the deme of Aixoni, famed for the "Aixonian trigle", the red mullet praised in ancient texts. Over the 20th century Glyfada grew from a small fishing village into a cosmopolitan suburb, and part of its municipal shore appears among Greece's Blue Flag awarded beaches.

Entry is free and the shore has fine sand with shallow water. There is parking close by, and natural shade is limited, so an umbrella is useful.
