Sand and pines on the peninsula

Mikro Kavouri lies on the wooded Kavouri peninsula at Vouliagmeni, about sixteen kilometres south of central Athens. Together with neighbouring Megalo Kavouri it shares a fine-sand shoreline that has long been one of the Athenians' favourite escapes on the Riviera.

In antiquity the wider area belonged to the deme of Halai Aixonides, and near Megalo Kavouri an ancient wagon road dating from the 4th century BC, about 300 metres long, has been excavated, once linking the deme with its harbour. Tamarisk trees along the sand give natural shade in places and lend the beach something of the feel of old Attic countryside.

The beach combines free and organized sections, with fine sand on the shore and into the sea and shallow water. Cafes and food options operate seasonally nearby, a paved road reaches close to the sand, and there is on-street parking.
