The stars of the Athens Riviera
Paralia Astera Glyfadas stretches along Poseidonos Avenue in the southern part of Glyfada, with fine sand on the shore and into the sea. It is the beach of the historic Asteria complex, a name bound up with the golden age of the Athens Riviera.
The bathing facilities were revived by the Greek National Tourism Organisation after the war, and from the 1950s and 1960s the Asteria became synonymous with cosmopolitan life, its multicoloured umbrellas filling the sand. The area holds deeper history too: works that began in 1998 are reported to have brought to light an Early Helladic necropolis of the 3rd millennium BC, workshops of the same era and a Roman building, finds now presented along an archaeological walk inside the complex.
The beach operates as an organized plaz, with sunbeds, umbrellas, a beach bar, food service, showers and toilets, plus a lifeguard in season. A paved road leads to the entrance and there is parking close by, while natural shade is limited.
