The palm-lined city beach

Akti tou Iliou sits in Alimos, on the Athens Riviera, and is cited as the organized beach closest to the Athens city center. Its shore mixes fine white sand with small pebbles and faces southwest, toward the open Saronic Gulf.

Alimos stands on the ground of the ancient deme of Halimous, recorded as the birthplace of the historian Thucydides, and archaeological finds show the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The beach itself works like a small summer complex, with palms, trees and lawns along the sand, volleyball and racket courts and event spaces, carrying on the long tradition of Athens' municipal beaches.
