The city beach with a paradise name

Edem beach lies in Palaio Faliro, on the Athens waterfront, and is one of the sandy shores closest to the city centre. Its name is said to come from the historic Edem restaurant of 1919, which lent its name to the neighbourhood, the shore and even the tram stop.

By local tradition the name Edem was chosen to evoke paradise, at a time when this coast was still countryside, away from the noise of Athens. In 1933 the restaurant moved into a building on the beach, modern for its day and reportedly designed by the architect Stamos Papadakis, and the little bay became a fixture of the Faliro seaside promenade.

The shore is sandy with shallow water, with seasonal cafes and natural shade in places from the trees along the waterfront. Getting there is easy, with a paved road reaching close to the beach, parking nearby and the tram stopping right by the coast.
