The white chapel among the pines

Paralia Agiou Alexandrou lies at Elliniko, on the seafront of the Athens Riviera between Alimos and Glyfada. It takes its name from the whitewashed chapel of Agios Alexandros standing right by the water, a landmark so familiar that the neighbouring tram stop is named after it.

The chapel, ringed by pine trees, is said to have been built in the late 1940s by army engineers serving at a nearby camp. A small harbour opens in front of it, and the shore keeps a low-key, neighbourhood feel compared with the big organized beaches of the Riviera.

The beach is mostly free and unorganized, with pebbles and rocks and water that deepens fairly quickly. A paved road runs close to the shore, with on-street parking nearby, while natural shade is limited, so an umbrella is useful.
