The breeze that named the shore

Batis lies on the Palaio Faliro waterfront, one of the sandy shores closest to the center of Athens, next to the neighboring Edem beach. It is said to owe its name to the "batis", the Greek word for the sea breeze off the open water.

Faliro is recorded as the oldest harbor of ancient Athens, before Themistocles turned the city toward Piraeus, and in the late 19th century the area grew into the capital's first seaside resort, with bathing establishments and a tram line linking it to Athens. The shore runs along the palm-lined paved promenade, close to the Planetarium of the Eugenides Foundation.

The beach has fine sand and shallow water, with natural shade in spots from the trees of the seafront. Seasonal cafes operate in season, a paved road reaches close to the shore and parking is available nearby.
