Potami: the waterfall gateway near Karlovasi

Potami is one of the best-known beaches of northwest Samos, a few kilometres from the town of Karlovasi. It is a long beach of pebbles and coarse sand at the point where a stream meets the sea and gives the area its name.

Above the beach, climbing beside the stream through a plane-tree gorge, lie the Potami waterfalls. At the start of the trail stands the little church of Metamorphosis, said to be among the oldest on the island, and higher up the ruins of a Genoese castle. Paths also set off from here towards the remote Seitani beaches to the west.

Access is easy, by a made-up road with parking nearby, and in the summer months a seasonal beach bar/canteen operates. There are also cafés and tavernas close by. The beach has been awarded a Blue Flag.
