The caves near Moudros where monk seals appear
Megalo Fanaraki spreads about four kilometres outside Moudros, on the eastern side of Lemnos, and is the larger of two neighbouring sandy beaches that share the name Fanaraki, lying beside Mikro Fanaraki. It is a fine-sand beach roughly two hundred metres long.
Wind and waves have carved caves and unusual rock formations into the shore. It is reported that Mediterranean monk seals (Monachus monachus), one of the rarest mammals in the Mediterranean, occasionally take refuge in these caves, as they favour just such underwater caves and secluded beaches.
It is an organized beach, with umbrellas, sunbeds and a beach bar in season, while a few trees give natural shade. Access is by a made-up road from Moudros that turns to dirt only in its final metres, with parking nearby.
