The white-sand shore below Panagia

Zematas lies on the north-eastern side of Lemnos, below the village of Panagia, a beach of fine, near-white sand that runs about three hundred and fifty metres long. It is one of the best-known beaches on this side of the island.

The village of Panagia, which gives the beach its location, was founded around 1865 by residents of Agios Ypatios and Kontopouli who held fields in the area, and takes its name from a ruined monastery of the Panagia (the Virgin) that once stood there. Along the shore, tamarisk trees offer natural shade in places.

It has no permanent organization, with the natural shade of the trees standing in for umbrellas. Access is relatively easy from the road, with parking nearby.
